Price Pitches Tigers To Opening Day Win

Detroit beat Minnesota 4-0 at Comerica Park Monday.

Opening Day

The Detroit Tigers beat the Minnesota Twins 4-0 on Opening Day at Comerica Park Monday. David Price nearly pitched the entire game for the Tigers. Manager Brad Ausmus removed the lefty ace after he gave up an infield single to Twins first baseman Joe Mauer with a runner on and two outs in the ninth inning.

“I told (Ausmus) I was good, he told me Mauer was my last hitter. So I knew then. I threw a good 0-0 fastball, and I’m fine with the cutter I threw there at the end,” Price said after the game.

Closer Joe Nathan got the last out in the ninth, striking out former Tiger Torii Hunter. Detroit scored three runs in the second inning on a solo homerun by rightfielder J.D. Martinez and a two-run shot by catcher Alex Avila. Leftfielder Yoenis Cespedes had two hits, including a triple in the sixth inning. Nick Castellanos drove Cespedes home with a sacrifice fly to centerfield. The Tigers are off Tuesday. They’ll play the Twins on Thursday afternoon.
