When he started releasing electronic music, Detroit-based producer Shigeto quickly became known for using parts of hip hop, house music, and jazz to create something completely new.

After roughly four years since his last album, Shigeto is back with The New Monday. Released via Ghostly International, the project is meant to further explore dance music and get people on their feet.

WDET’s Gus Navarro speaks with Shigeto about the new album and what its meant to start Portage Garage Sounds, a record label he created with his brother.

“The new music…is vast in genre, but focused on individual tracks,” he explains.

“It’s not a dance record, but there’s a lot more…dance-themed music on it.”
