The City of Southfield will work to improve sidewalks near three schools.

The Michigan Department of Transportation’s “Safe Routes to School” grant is awarding the city $600,000 to upgrade signals and the pathways near schools.

Mayor Ken Siver says Southfield residents have had to walk in the streets for decades.

“The sidewalk network is not complete and much of what is there is older. So this will make a complete sidewalk system and it will replace the existing sidewalks that are in disrepair,” Siver says.

Siver says Southfield has already added about 10 miles of new pathways and sidewalks in neighborhoods.

He says the repairs should be finished by next summer.
