On the latest episode of Detroit Evening Report Weekends, WDET’s Sascha Raiyn talks to author and “poetjournalist” Aaron Dworkin about the work of his Institute for Poetjournalism.

Dworkin is better known for founding the Sphinx Organization, which works to make classical music professions accessible to Black and brown musicians.

Named a 2005 MacArthur Fellow and a the first appointed member of the National Council on the Arts, Dworkin serves on President Joe Biden’s Arts Policy Committee, and is a former dean and current professor of Arts Leadership & Entrepreneurship at the University of Michigan’s School of Music, Theatre & Dance.

Dworkin has also been a poet for a long time.

He spoke with Raiyn about how poetry could play a role in explaining what’s happening in the world and putting it in perspective — an idea that led to his founding of the Institute for Poetjournalism.
