MI Local: Detroit singer-songwriter Ally Evenson talks UFO Factory gig, touring with Band of Horses + more
Jeff Milo June 5, 2024Listen to “MI Local” with host Jeff Milo every Tuesday from 9-10 p.m. ET on Detroit Public Radio 101.9 WDET.
On this episode of MI Local, I’m joined in the studio by singer-songwriter Ally Evenson to talk about an upcoming performance at the UFO Factory and her tour with Band of Horses.
Evenson touched on her origins growing up in the Port Huron area before moving to Detroit. Her dad is a musician and her mother is an artist “and both of them raised me to be artsy in some capacity,” she said. Evenson started singing from a very young age and took piano lessons, but shared “guitar was the first instrument that I actually wanted to play!”
The first song Evenson learned when her dad bought her a guitar was “That’s Alright, Mama” by Elvis Presley.
Working with producer Ben Collins in his Ypsilanti studio, Evenson recorded “Porch Light,” which is featured on this episode of MI Local. Check out the music video for “Porch Light” below — which features Evenson wandering through various scenes with her head covered by a lampshade.
We also talk about her upcoming show at UFO Factory on Friday, touring with Band of Horses and more.
You’ll also hear a sampling of some brand new music from local punk rockers The Boreouts, a preview of upcoming local festivals and a rock show happening inside the old Simpson’s Record Shop.
