Aaliyah
Aliyah embodied the Spirit of Detroit. She represented for the city. Still beloved by millions around the world, she will always hold a special place in the hearts of musically minded Detroiters. When the news of her untimely passing shook the world, Detroit poet, performer and author Khary Kimani Turner wrote a eulogy for the Metro Times that today remains a lyrical, heartfelt testament to her memory.
Now, 15 years after that fateful plane crash, Turner revisits the words he wrote and the emotions he felt with WDET’s Culture Shift.
