Tyrone Clifton, director of the Detroit Building Authority, says contaminants within the stack have been cleaned out and nearby facilities such as the county jail have been notified. According to Clifton, nearby residents have also been notified of the June 11 demolition.

“[We’re] working with the Department of Neighborhoods to make sure that anything else, when it comes to residents, have been notified and let them know what’s going on,” says Clifton.

But Breathe Free Detroit organizer KT Morelli says the city did not distribute notices to 200 residents.

“He just dropped off 65 fliers to one of our board members and told us to deliver them ourselves,” claims Morelli.

Morelli states she doubts the city will take all the necessary steps to protect residents from contaminants since it allowed the incinerator to pollute the air for three decades. It was finally shut down in 2019.
