This year marks the seventh year of Detroit’s City Walls campaign and city officials say it’ll be the biggest one to date. The program has expanded in 2023 with 23 new locations and 25 new artists. Since it began in 2017, more than 125 mural locations have been beautified.

Later this month, the city will issue a second wave of open calls for the 2023 season. In total, more than $500,000 will be passed out to local artists to create 40 new murals across the city this summer.

Zak Meers is a local artist and the head of the blight remediation division in the city’s general services department. He joined CultureShift to discuss how the community has responded to the program so far.

“What we’re most interested in is curating the connection between the artists and the community. Our projects are only successful if those two — the community and the artists — are both happy.” — Zak Meers, City of Detroit Head of Blight Remediation
