Detroit Evening Report: Automatic expungement of criminal convictions in Michigan begins today

The state of Michigan is beginning to implement its “clean slate” provisions today, as certain felony and misdemeanor convictions will be automatically expunged.

These convictions will be wiped from a person’s criminal record and related police and court documents will become private. The action comes as the Clean Slate Act passed in 2020 takes effect.
Michigan Attorney General Dana Nessel says as many as one million Michiganders could benefit from the process.
Convictions that will be expunged include those for misdemeanor marijuana possession. Voters passed a ballot proposal to legalize recreational marijuana use in 2018.
As the Detroit Free Press reports, Detroit residents can receive assistance with the expungement process from attorneys with Project Clean Slate.
