Detroit Evening Report: Unemployment rate in Detroit matches 20-year low
Welcome to the Detroit Evening Report, a daily round-up of news that city residents need to know.
Mayor Mike Duggan announced Thursday that the city of Detroit’s unemployment rate has fallen to 7 percent, the lowest in over 20 years.
According to the National Bureau of Labor Statistics’ September 2022 Employment Data Report, the unemployment rate is down from 12.5 percent last year. This matches the lowest rate Detroit has seen since September 2000.
Officials attributed lower unemployment to continued development and investment in the city and its workforce. Detroit’s unemployment rate spiked to more than 38 percent in May 2020, two months into the COVID-19 pandemic in the U.S.
Duggan and officials say they’re confident the momentum will continue as more development comes to the area.
Detroit at Work, the city’s workforce development program, works to create career opportunities for residents of all skill levels. Since January of this year, Detroit at Work has held 61 job fairs, with more than 10,000 people in attendance.
