Pop culture critic predicts newcomer wins at tonight’s Emmys

The 74th Emmy award show is happening tonight. CultureShift spoke with Detroit Free Press reporter Julie Hinds about this year’s nominees and potential winners.
Shows like Apple TV’s Severance, ABC’s Abbott Elementary and HBO’s Euphoria are all fan favorites this award season.
However, Hinds says there’s one show that continues to dominate nominations.
“It feels like Succession is the favorite. It’s covered so much in the media. It’s got that watercooler buzz about it about the extremely wealthy, extremely awful media family that is just vying for power within their family company structure.”
There is also a noticeable changing of the guard happening in Hollywood as new actors and actresses emerge, according to Hinds.
Laura Linney of Netflix’s Ozark and Reese Witherspoon from Apple TV’s The Morning Show are nominated for best lead actress in a drama series. However, newcomers like Jodie Comer from AMC’s Killing Eve and Zendaya from HBO’s Euphoria are fan favorites.
Hinds says traditionally, the Emmy’s have been pretty stuffy and stodgy.
“To be honest, I think the Emmys of 10 years ago wouldn’t have nominated somebody like Zendaya until she had paid her TV dues.”
The award show starts tonight at 8 p.m. on ABC and Peacock. It’s hosted by SNL long-time cast member Kenan Thompson.
