Detroit Receives Grants to Preserve Historic Sites
Detroit is receiving nearly $50,000 in grant money from the Michigan Historic Preservation Network.
The State Historic Preservation Office with Michigan State Housing Development Authority is granting Detroit about $50,000 for historic research and repairs on two historic sites.
About $15,000 of the grant will be used to conduct archeological surveys at Historic Fort Wayne.
Network spokesperson Laura Ashlee says the purpose is to update the National Register of Historic Places.
“Fort Wayne was designated with listing in the national register back in 1971, but we want to learn more about the history of the site and re-evaluate the structures and the archeological resources there,” Ashlee says.
Ashlee says the remaining money will be used to repair the roof at the Ford Piquette Avenue Plant. She says the City of Detroit will match the funds for both projects.
