Grief and pain can break us — but they can also break us open. It can move us to take new risks and change us in ways we often can’t imagine.

This is what that CNN host Zain Asher writes about in her new memoir, “Where The Children Take Us.” But this story is it’s not really about her.

It centers around the life of Asher’s mom — how she struggled through loneliness and despair in the U.K. after the death of her husband, which left her to raise children in a country where she had only recently immigrated.

“As I grew older, it was really then that I truly began to appreciate just everything that my mother had done for us.” — Zain Asher, CNN host and author
