Detroit Evening Report: April 21, 2022: State warns of expected rise in COVID-19 cases
Welcome to the Detroit Evening Report, a daily round-up of news that city residents need to know.
As residents prepare to gather for group celebrations this spring, the state health department is warning of an expected rise in COVID-19 cases in the coming weeks, driven by the more contagious omicron subvariant. Dr. Natasha Bagdasarian is the state’s chief medical executive. She encourages all Michiganders to make sure to have masks and over-the-counter tests on hand and to be up to date with vaccines. The state says hospitalizations and deaths are not expected to rise significantly because of the level of vaccination, boosters and immunity from the recent omicron spike. As of Wednesday, there have been more than 125 thousand confirmed cases and nearly 35 hundred deaths from the virus in Detroit.
