Detroit Evening Report, April 12, 2022: Inflation rose 8.5% in March, the largest increase in 40 years
Welcome to the Detroit Evening Report, a daily round-up of news that city residents need to know.
U.S. inflation is the worst it’s been in 40 years. The Labor Department’s Consumer Price Index rose 8.5% in March. That’s the largest year-over-year increase since 1981. The war in Ukraine, higher gas prices, supply chain issues and increased consumer demand are among the reasons analysts cite for the jump in inflation. Across the country, the price of gasoline has jumped nearly 50% in the past year. And Detroiters are paying more for groceries such as fruit, eggs and baby food.
