Detroit Evening Report, March 25, 2022: Proposal aims to provide attorneys for income-eligible renters facing eviction

Welcome to the Detroit Evening Report, a daily round-up of news that city residents need to know.
A new proposal seeks to provide representation for low-income Detroiters facing eviction or other housing-related legal issues like foreclosures or land contract forfeitures. The United Community Housing Coalition says the 36th District Court has more than 30,000 residents appear each year to address landlord-tenant disputes. The majority of the residents are low-income and don’t have legal representation. That results in many of the disputes favoring landlords and residents losing their homes. Advocates worry that evictions may be on the rise again with federal emergency rent aid running out. City officials this week said the proposal would be too costly.
