Frontier Ruckus started out during the “freak-folk” days of the mid-2000s, born out of a high school friendship between singer-songwriter Matthew Milia and banjoist David W. Jones.
When these metro Detroit-raised musicians went off to college at Michigan State, they fatefully put out an ad on Facebook looking for anyone who could play the singing-saw. When Zachary Nichols answered the call, Frontier Ruckus was essentially born.
Frontier Ruckus perform live inside WDET’s Studio A
Over the last 20 years, the band has released six studio albums — including this year’s On The Northline — along with several tours across the nation and the globe, and heaps of acclaim from noteworthy tastemakers in the music press.
Prior to On The Northline’s release this past February, it had been seven years since Frontier Ruckus last album, but their latest marks significant growth for the group in more ways than one.
The band performed four songs from On The Northline, including “Mercury Sable” and “Everywhere But Beside You,” both of which are heartfelt love songs inspired by Milia’s partner, Lauren. Other songs featured were “In The Money” and “Mercury Sable,” showcasing Zachary Nichols’ eclectic melodica, singing-saw and trumpet.
Frontier Ruckus have had a busy 2024 performing at several shows and festivals across the region. Their latest update indicated that their stop here at WDET was essentially the finale for the year as far as live performances go.
