Detroit Evening Report: Michigan meal program expands to over 100 participating restaurants in 26 counties

The Michigan Department of Health and Human Services Restaurant Meal Program continues to expand.
The department has provided restaurant meals to senior citizens and eligible food assistance recipients for the past three years. The Restaurant Meal Program launched in January 2021 and has grown to more than 100 participating restaurants in 26 counties.

The purpose of the program is to help residents who have a tough time preparing their own meals due to a disability, age or lack of a kitchen access. Beneficiaries can use their food assistance benefits — through means like the Bridge card — to purchase meals at participating restaurants. Adults 60 and over, people who receive disability or blindness payments, disability retirement benefits from a government agency, and people experiencing homelessness are eligible for the MDHHS Restaurant Meal Program.
