WDET "Alternate Take" host Liz Warner poses with members of the band Infinite River.

Born out of cosmic vibes, indie-space-pop foundations and a rock and roll legacy, Detroit’s Infinite River creates a rich, layered guitar-led landscape all its own.

The musicians of Infinite River — Gretchen Gonzales, Joey Mazzola, Warren Defever and Rob Avsharian — have been active for decades as Slumber Party, His Name Is Alive, Detroit Cobras, Terror at the Opera and Sponge. As a quartet, they’ve only released music together since 2023, but the dynamic push-pull forces at play create movement, glued together by an experience-driven quest brought to light in its sonically and visually curated live performances.

Infinite River performed at the Detroit Institute of Arts for the Concert of Colors music festival in 2023, and recently were slotted as the opening act on Sonic Youth co-founder Kim Gordon’s tour.

For this year’s Concert of Colors, two of the band’s members will perform as Silver Chord at the Scarab Club for a VIP reception on Wednesday, July 17, along with The New Music Show host Shigeto and myself. Get tickets at eventbrite.com.

Infinite River performed three songs for this intimate WDET live session: one song from their latest album, Tabula Rasa, and two unreleased tracks.

I also chatted with the band about their music, influences and experimental approach to creating their sound.
