Renowned Detroit funk and soul musician and producer Joseph “Amp” Fiddler died on Sunday, Dec. 17, at the age of 65.

Detroit City Council declared May 15 as Amp Fiddler Day, so you better believe I did the same thing on In The Groove today.

If you don’t know Amp, his New York Times obituary lovingly written by Mike Rubin is a good place to start.

I’m extremely proud the city made the move to honor one of the greatest musical geniuses to ever come from Detroit. I hope it’s the start of Detroit officials taking the arts and culture of the greatest music city on the planet a bit more seriously — and honoring folks from here before they die.

You’ll hear plenty of deep cut Amp tracks today, plus his collabs with Will Sessions, Moodymann, J Dilla and more.

There’s a lot of new stuff mixed in too, and some classics for throwback Thursday. Check the playlist below and listen to the episode for two weeks after it airs using the media player at the top.
