In The Groove: A fond farewell to beloved musical mastermind and forever punk Steve Albini
Listen to “In the Groove” with Ryan Patrick Hooper weekdays from noon-3 p.m. ET on 101.9 WDET.
Today, I’m doing the show with a heavy heart following the news this week that legendary engineer (never wanted to be called a producer) Steve Albini died of a heart attack at just the age of 61.
He recorded one of my favorite albums of all time — Pixies’ Surfer Rosa — and literally hundreds of others for Nirvana, PJ Harvey, Bush, Breeders — you name it.
An icon of the alternative. A forever punk. An absolute great music writer who hated the industry and was a beloved curmudgeon. There’s music on the show today that he helped make from Low, Pixies, Nirvana, Superchunk, PJ Harvey, Songs: Ohia and Helmet.
As for the new stuff, enjoy works from Tom Misch, Loma, Brijean, Detroit’s own Kyle Hall and more.
