The Detroit Free Press announced the first half of their ten best new restaurants and more list for 2023. According to Freep restaurant and dining critic Lyndsay C. Green, spots 6-10 on the list represent “five standout cocktail bars, cooks and pop-ups that excelled between 2021-2022.”

I continue my conversation series with Green with part three, where she explains how these five entities stood out to make her list, which you can find below.

One of the new categories that make up the top ten list is the Emerging Chef category, highlighting an individual who is helping to move Detroit’s food scene forward. The inaugural winner is Josmine Evans, founder and owner of the pop-up Indigo Culinary Co. and co-owner of Detroit-based garden The Joy Project.

“She is doing something really special where she is not only cooking really great foods, but she is focused on preserving Afro Atlantic foodways,” says Green. “She’s pairing her dishes with storytelling, so her role is sort of a hybrid. She really doesn’t even like to be called the chef. She’s a cook, she’s a griot, she’s a preserver of culture.”
