PLAY IT: Venbee x Goddard – ‘Messy in Heaven’
WDET’s PLAY IT spotlights a song that we think you’ll dig — whether it’s a local, national or international flavor. This week it’s UK drum ‘n’ bass artist Venbee.
“I heard Jesus did cocaine on a night out.”
That’s the opening line to Venbee’s anti-drug anthem, “Messy in Heaven,” featuring producer Goddard. And the rest of the song is just as enjoyable.
Venbee, real name Erin Doyle, is a 21-year-old artist from South East England who has overcome a lot of obstacles to get to where she is today. Due to dyslexia, Venbee wasn’t able to read until the age of 18. She also faced doubters when sharing her goal to be an artist.
“As I got older, I was told I needed a backup plan because it all wasn’t going to work out,” Venbee told NME. “But I don’t give up on things — I never had a Plan B.”
Thanks to TikTok, Venbee got the last laugh when a demo of her song, “Low Down,” went viral on the social media platform. The track is about dealing with depression, which clearly resonated with listeners as mental health awareness has become a higher priority since the COVID pandemic began.
She’s now signed to Columbia Records and currently working on an EP.
As for “Messy in Heaven,” watch the frenetic music video below. It’s definitely a vibe.
