Man Shot, Dies After Encounter With Detroit Police
Officers were responding to a call of a man who had harmed himself with a knife, Detroit Police Chief James Craig says.
For the second time in two days, a man was killed after a clash with Detroit Police.
Police Chief James Craig said Tuesday afternoon officers were called-in to assist with a man in mental distress and armed with a knife who had already harmed himself on the east side.
“When they arrived at the scene, the suspect had inflicted serious injury upon himself with a large knife. It was a very horrific scene,” he said. Officers then tried to take the knife away from the man.
“As the officers got there, they were doing everything they could to remove the weapon from the individual. As they were doing that the suspect began to stab our officer several times in the leg. A partner fearing for that officer’s safety fired several rounds,” he said.
One officer suffered stab wounds to their leg and a gunshot wound to the hand — a result of friendly fire from the other officer. As of Tuesday evening, the officer was in stable condition.
Craig said the deceased man’s mother told police she believed her son was dealing with a situation based on drug usage.
Early Monday morning, Detroit police shot and killed a man who they say instigated a police chase and gun battle.
