Michigan Lawmakers Respond To Capitol Breach
In normal years, the certification of the electoral vote in Congress is a formality, but today, pro-Trump extremists interrupted proceedings and forced an evacuation the U.S. Capitol.
This is a developing story.
A group of pro-Trump extremists stormed the U.S. Capitol on Wednesday in an attempt to thwart a peaceful transfer of power, forcing lawmakers to evacuate the building.
Michigan lawmakers have taken to Twitter to provide updates on their safety and condemn this stunning attempted insurrection.
Senator Gary Peters
I am safe, sheltering in a secure location and will continue to follow the guidance of the Capitol Police.
Today’s attacks on the Capitol are dangerous, unacceptable and an attack on our democracy—and must stop.

Senator Debbie Stabenow
I’m safe, sheltering in a secure place, and listening to the guidance of law enforcement.
Thank you to the Capitol Police and law enforcement for keeping everyone safe.

Rep. Jack Bergman (MI-01)
I’ve said it dozens of times in the past few years – I support every American’s right to peacefully protest, but violence and attacks on our police have no place on our streets, or in our Capitol.
— Rep. Jack Bergman (@RepJackBergman) January 6, 2021
Rep Bill Huizenga (MI-02)
Apparently there is a report that I am or was stuck outside of the Capitol building. I am in the Capitol and in the House Chamber. Debate regarding Arizona’s electors has been suspended due to a breach of the Capitol building itself.

Rep. Peter Meijer (MI-03)
Unacceptable. Enough. Acknowledge Biden as President-Elect and end this madness. Violent rioters laid siege to the nation’s Capitol in an act of insurrection unparalleled in modern times. This is not leadership. https://t.co/to4tupN8YH

Rep. Dan Kildee (MI-05)
I have been evacuated from the House Chambers and have been escorted to an alternate, safe location.
This is a dark moment for the history of our country. Praying for an end to the violence and safety for everyone in the Capitol.

Rep. Fred Upton (MI-06)
I am safe and sheltered in place. Horrified and shell-shocked by the violence of rioters trying to undo the constitutional transfer of power. @RealDonaldTrump, for the sake of our nation and safety of our people, tell your supporters to stand down and leave town.

Rep. Tim Walberg (MI-07)
The threatening behavior taking place at the U.S. Capitol is dangerous and unacceptable. It is a foundational right to protest peacefully, but violence is never the answer. Grateful for the men and women of the @CapitolPolice who are keeping us safe.

Rep. Elissa Slotkin (MI-08)
I am remaining safely in my office, as are my staff who were directed to stay home. Rep. Andy Levin is with me since his office building was evacuated. I have seen first hand today the bravery of the Capitol Police, and I’m thankful for their professionalism and dedication.

Rep. Andy Levin (MI-09)
The president of the United States encouraged his supporters to overrun the United States Capitol. While the situation is still unfolding, this much is clear: this is an attack on our country. https://t.co/3D3TRFbLTI

Rep. Lisa McClain (MI-10)
To be clear, patriots is another word for law enforcement – those who risk their safety for the greater good.
These attacks on our nation’s Capitol must stop. This is beneath America.
