Tribute from Cynthia Goldberg

Ed Love Testimonial Goldberg

When my husband, Steven Lapointe, got an academic job at Wayne State in 1982, we moved to Michigan not quite sure what we would discover. We lived in Oakland County and discovered WDET and Ed Love. For the 10 years we lived there, we tried never to miss a show. At one point we started recording them on audio cassettes so we could enjoy them again. No streaming archives in those days.

Now I live in California, widowed for many years. I recently discovered a box of tapes from Ed’s History of Jazz. Sadly I don’t own a cassette tape player so I am on a mission to purchase one. I even emailed WDET to see if these are available as CDs, but alas not. Now I’ve begun listening from my home in Northern California to Ed’s voice. Smooth, slow, and filled with so much musical knowledge to share. Sadly also my husband is no longer here to share the jazz with me. But in hearing Ed’s voice and listening to jazz from every decade, I am drawn back to those magical times in Michigan when we were discovering the joy of jazz with the best teacher ever, Ed Love.

We became jazz fans through Ed gentle wisdom and I am thankful and privileged to have been a WDET and Ed Love fan for the past 40 years.
