Ed Love Testimonial Kenny Green

SUBMITTED BY: Kenny Green

Ed Love is truly a treasure and a musical institution in the D. The hip thing about Ed is that he continues to evolve. When I cut my Jazz teeth in the late 60’s it was Ed who made it happen, as the centerpiece on Detroit’s Black radio, WCHD/ WJZZ. Ed new the possibilities of the art form and its connection to the community from which it came. He discerningly selected and programed music from the innovators of this American Classical Art form. Ed was his own man somewhat of a purest but a paradox. In his understanding of the power of Jazz music as an agent of change, Ed played no Dixieland, Ragtime or big band jazz. However, he proudly stated that he would never play the music of Sun Ra. For some time, he did not. This, however, was short-lived as Ed proved to be a renaissance man of radio.
