Three Michigan Grassroots Organizers Make the Case for Their Presidential Candidate

The Democratic presidential primary is heating up with the candidates starting to trade sharper jabs as they continue to make their case to voters.
With Michigan’s primary election fast approaching on March 10, campaign organizers are preparing to make final pitches on behalf of their candidate. A panel of three organizers from three different campaigns join Detroit Today with Stephen Henderson to talk about their experiences as campaign volunteers in Michigan and their outlook on the race.

Jim McLuckie is a local grassroots volunteer for Sen. Bernie Sanders (I-VT).
“I believe in him so much it just kind of was natural.”
McLuckie says while he hopes Sanders is the party’s nominee, he is willing to support whoever is at the top of the Democratic ticket in the general election. Depending on the candidate, this could be a tall order for McLuckie. “There’s a scale about how much I’m going to have to suck it up depending on the candidate,” says McLuckie.
Daniel Boston has been volunteering with Mayor Pete Buttigieg’s campaign as a grassroots Wayne County Organizer.
Boston says he has found organizing cathartic, especially with the national debate being so adversarial.
“It’s so rewarding to put yourself out there and talk about something that’s so emotional for people.”
Buttigeg’s calm, rational and human-centric approach to politics drew Boston to the campaign. “I consider Pete a pragmatic progressive,” says Boston.
Alistair Stephenson is volunteering as a Community Team Leader for Sen. Elizabeth Warren (D-MA). Stephenson was called to Warren’s campaign because of her audacious ideas.
“Her courage is easily the most evident thing about Elizabeth Warren. She has the big bold agenda that meets the moment.”
On his experience as an organizer, Stephenson says, “One of the most rewarding parts of getting off Twitter and knocking on doors is it really helps to bust the cynicism.”
