Detroit Rapper - Danny Brown in-studio

Detroit rapper Danny Brown has an infectious laugh.

It’s not a gimmick. It’s a part of his natural aesthetic and contributes to his comedic punchline approach to delivering rhymes – a technique he notes as a dated style of writing raps, but attributes to his appreciation for stand-up comedy.

This album “was my version of making a classic rap album. This is ‘Sunday-kick-your-feet-up music.'” – Danny Brown, rapper

In Danny’s fifth studio album “uknowhatimsayin¿ while still packing the witty one-liners, the flow eliminates the use of excessive profanity and opts for a laid back approach. It’s a slight change of tempo from the “turn-up-jump-around” adrenaline rush that fans have grown accustomed to since the release of his 2010 studio album debut, “The Hybrid.”

This offering, executive produced by Q-Tip, “was my version of making a classic rap album. This is ‘Sunday-kick-your-feet-up music,'” says Brown.

The vibe is felt throughout “Best Life” — a single from “uknowhatimsayin¿” that Danny performed on “The Tonight Show with Jimmy Fallon.” The live performance mimicked the music video’s floral deconstructed car decor designed by Detroit botanical artist Lisa Waud. She joined the artist and his team in New York City for the televised performance.

“I can’t take all the credit,” he laughs. “Shout out to my manager [Dart Parker] — he came with the treatment and that’s what I went with. It was dope.”

In reference to the talents of Waud, he adds, “There’s so many dope, talented people in Detroit. That’s why it’s always good to be able to shed some light on the scene when I get a chance to.”

Brown will be shedding more light on Detroit talent, this Wednesday, as he brings his sixth annual Bruiser Brigade Thanksgiving to the Majestic Theater. The line-up highlights fresh voices emerging from the city – something Brown was intentional about creating when curating the show.

“For Bruiser Thanksgiving, a lot of people come up from surrounding Midwest areas that I don’t tour so, might as well book and showcase some of the [hottest talent from Detroit].”
