Joe Posch is keen on theme-based business, specifically the pop-up shop concept. In 2009, he opened Hugh, a“six-month tribute to classic mid-century entertaining and design” store in Midtown. The launch marked the region’s first pop-up shop and is currently a permanent stop along Cass Avenue.

As part of Detroit Month of Design, Posch’s 1980’s-inspired pop-up, Ecce Pomo made its debut. Located inside of the Floyd Shop at Eastern Market, through September 28, Ecce Pomo directs attention to the original designs of the post-modern era– late 1970s to the early 1990s, with household products and daily use materials.

Opposed to a stagnant exhibition style, Ecce Pomo incorporates interactive elements, inviting consumers to touch, explore, and purchase.

About the idea, Posch says, “This era was a reaction to the severity and the rules of modernism. Specifically, form follows function. I’ve been selling things in this era for a long time, but I’ve never put them together in a collection. So, I thought this was fun. It’s been bubbling in popular culture and in new design for a while, so I thought it would be fun to see where these influences came from.”

Joe stopped by WDET studios to tell CultureShift’s Ryan Patrick Hooper all about the state of design and the history of his latest concept store. Click the audio player to hear their discussion.

Ecce Pomo will be hosted inside the Floyd Shop in Eastern Market through September 28.
