In just a little under five years, the Baltimore Gallery became a staple in Detroit’s art scene. Now, the doors have closed and owner Phillip Simpson is painting his next moves.

Yes, art lovers and creative socialites, the Baltimore Gallery has officially closed its doors. But, the good news is that it doesn’t mean the cool vibes and art stops. In fact, it’s just the opposite.

Phillip Simpson, founder of the Baltimore Gallery, is entering a new chapter with the goal being to center focus back into producing public art and spreading joy through his apparel company.

“I believe that the four-and-a-half years we were open, we definitely provided that safe space for artists, photographers, dancers and local artists to showcase their works and feel at home. I’m going to miss it,” Simpson says. “I’ve had conversations with other artists, and we’re all going to miss it, but it was a time period that needed to happen and now as a father [and] husband, it’s time for me to grow into my next phase which is more murals, more public art and paying a little more attention to The Smile Brand and grow it a bit.”

Draped in an army green tee with his ‘Smile’ mantra scripted across his chest in white letters, Simpson brought his positive energy to the studio to speak with Cultureshift host Ryan Patrick Hooper about life ambitions after the gallery and the state of Detroit public art.
