Documentary Looks at the Continuing Legacy of Short-Lived “Freaks and Geeks”
“Freaks and Geeks: The Documentary” director Brent Hodge joins Detroit Today with Stephen Henderson.
It’s been 20 years since the NBC show Freaks and Geeks hit TV screens, capturing the hearts of devoted fans around the world. It was a show about struggling through the most awkward years of life. It was about outcasts, love, bullying, and most of all, friendship. But despite the adoration of fans and critics alike, it was never a hugely popular show. NBC cancelled it after just one season. Today, many of the cast members and creative minds behind the show are superstars in Hollywood. The show helped launch the careers of Judd Apatow, Seth Rogan, James Franco, Linda Cardelinni, Jason Segal, Busy Philipps, and a few others.
And it comes with some hometown pride. The show was set right here in Metro Detroit where show creator, Paul Feig, grew up.
Now, there’s a documentary about the series screening at this week’s Freep Film Festival.

Freaks and Geeks: The Documentary will be premiering Friday, April 12th at 5:30pm and Saturday, April 13th at 8:00pm.
