Detroit Film Theatre Celebrates 45th Anniversary with “Shoplifters”
Included on former President Barack Obama’s favorite movies of 2018 list, the Japanese-language film “Shoplifters” will screen over two weekends at the DFT.

It was a snowy night in 1974 when the Detroit Film Theatre first opened its doors inside the Detroit Institute of Arts.
45 years later, the theatre is heading into 2019 with their anniversary season of films just announced.
DFT director Elliot Wilhelm has curated the films for the theatre since the very beginning. He spoke with CultureShift about the movie Shoplifters—an emotional story about a family of small-time thieves living in Tokyo by director Hirokazu Kore-eda.
“The first thing that, kind of, alarms viewers is that the family makes its way and eats and survives through stealing,” says Wilhelm. “You begin to discover as the movie goes on that it’s far more sophisticated and far more layered than one could ever imagine. The movie is about family, but it’s also about moral responsibility.”
