The 2019 Kresge Artist Fellowships are now accepting applications.
The fellowships award 18 unrestricted grants worth $25,000 each to local artists living in Metro Detroit who are working in the literary and visual fields.
CultureShift’s Ryan Patrick Hooper speaks with Kresge Arts in Detroit director Christina deRoos about the fellowships.
“It’s an open application process. Anyone can apply,” says deRoos.
Applying for a grant can be intimidating, but deRoos still encourages artists to apply.
“If you think you’re an artist, you’re an artist,” she says. “People work from a space of authenticity. Don’t worry about trying to get the application ‘right.’ Don’t worry about thinking if there’s particular ‘grant-speak.’ This, again, is a fellowship. It’s not a project-based grant and the distinction means you can do anything…with the award.”
