The Detroit Police Department is investigating a crash that killed one of its officers Tuesday morning.

Officer Darren Weathers was killed in a car crash on Michigan Avenue near Clark Street. The DPD says Weathers was part of a team that was conducting a training exercise that day.

Police Chief James Craig says the department is not sure if the training was a factor in the crash.

“I’m not clear yet because we still have a number of interviews to conduct to determine whether or not he was actively participating in the exercise. Was he participating? And if so, that’s problematic. Was he trying to connect with the team during the exercise? Again, we’re just not sure,” Craig says.

Craig says the department does not conduct training exercises in uncontrolled environments.

He says investigators are sure that speeding was a primary factor in the crash.
