A Detroit Police officer was killed in a car crash during a training exercise Tuesday morning.

Officer Darren Weathers was in an unmarked police car on Michigan Avenue near Clark Street when the crash occurred at 11:35 am.

The death comes after the loss of Officer Glenn Doss last month and the injuries of three officers during a 14-hour standoff earlier this week.

Detroit Police Chief James Craig says it’s a dark day for DPD. Craig says it is too soon to know what caused the accident.

The other vehicle in the fatal crash had passengers who were either uninjured or sustained minor injuries.

Weathers was 25 years old and had been on the job for a year and a half.

Chief Craig says Weathers was a phenomenal officer and truly one of Detroit’s finest.
