StoryCorps Detroit: “The bar was our CNN.”

In the 1980s and 1990s house music venues were a place of refuge and source of information for the LGBT community.

Damon “Magic” Percy and and Curtis Lipscomb are not biologically related, but they’re father and son in the LGBT community.

In this StoryCorps Detroit segment, Percy and Lipscomb talk about the house music venues where they danced the night away in the 1980s and 1990s. They also talk about the relationship between the HIV/AIDS epidemic and those spaces. As Lipscomb says, “The bar was our CNN.”
