Detroit ranked last in WalletHub’s study of best and worst cities for veterans.

Detroit scored well below-average for veteran unemployment…vets living in poverty…and the number of homeless veterans.

WalletHub Analyst Jill Gonzalez says there are a number of factors vets look at when deciding where to live…with job opportunity at number one.

“Many veterans or military retirees are in mid-30s to mid-40s upon retirement from the military,” Gonzalez says. “So obviously still very young and needing to go back out into the civilian workforce. So I think looking for veteran-friendly jobs opportunities from city to city is more important.”

The study also surveyed opinions about personal finance and found 72 percent of Americans say they would rather declare bankruptcy than fight in a war.

It also found 76 percent say the military doesn’t do enough to teach veterans about personal finance.
