New Orleans band, Tank and the Bangas, has been gaining national momentum over the past six months after winning the 2017 edition of NPR’s Tiny Desk Contest with an energetic and vibrant performance.

Infusing elements of funk, hip hop, and poetry, the band brings an upbeat and dynamic sound whenever they play. Led by Tarriona “Tank” Ball, The Bangas have been making their way around the United States on their first major tour.

Gus Navarro speaks with Ball in advance of the band’s Detroit performance at El Club tonight.

“Detroit is a city much like my own,” says Ball. “It’s been through so much, but there’s so many roses in the concrete. That’s the type of city that developed the best artists.”
