There’s a new community gathering space in Detroit.

Officials have unveiled the Spirit of Detroit Plaza, a multi-purpose civic space occupying a block of Woodward Avenue between Jefferson and Larned Streets.

Detroit Mayor Mike Duggan says the plaza is the missing link between the city’s Riverwalk and Campus Martius.

“It will also be easier for pedestrians to get to Hart Plaza and the Riverfront, because without people turning off of Woodward that crossing will be a lot easier so we have now linked the riverfront more closely to the rest of Detroit,” Duggan says.

Duggan says the space brings the city one step closer to having a walkable downtown.

He says the plaza will be open for a 90-day trial period while officials evaluate its overall impact.
