The NCAA says Detroit will soon be a college championship city.

The NCAA announced sites for future championship and tournament games and Detroit’s new Little Caesars Arena figures prominently in the selections.

The arena, which opens in September as the new home of the Detroit Pistons and Detroit Red Wings, will host the 2020 Men’s Frozen Four and the 2022 Division I Wrestling Championships.

In 2021, it will also be the site of first-round and second-round games in the prestigious Division I men’s college basketball tournament.

Even before the arena had been built, the NCAA had already chosen it to host the first two rounds of next year’s men’s basketball tournament.

The NCAA says the arena fits the criteria for championship sites.

That includes providing optimal facilities, easy travel access and a sufficient number of places to stay near the location and creating a safe atmosphere that respects diversity.
