Detroit Opens Four Warming Centers
Detroit’s warming centers will be open around the clock until power outages are resolved.
Detroit is opening four warming centers for residents looking to escape the cold. Wednesday’s windstorms left nearly 100,000 city residents without power, prompting officials to open the centers.
Donna Northern is the Emergency Management Coordinator for Detroit. She says the city has opened centers in the past, but this scenario is different.
“Typically, we keep them open during the winter time but just during operational hours of the center, but this time we will have them open 24 hours,” says Northern.
She says the city is prepared to open more centers in case many residents are looking for places to stay, adding that the warming centers will remain open for the duration of the power outage.
The warming centers are located at:
Crowell Community Center, 16630 Lahser, south of 6 Mile Road
Coleman A. Young Recreation Center, 2751 Bradby Drive, North of E. Lafayette
Farwell Recreation Center, 2711 E. Outer Drive, east of Ryan Road
Patton Recreation Center, 2301 Woodmere, north of W. Vernor Highway
