MDOT Installs First “Flex Route” on U.S. 23 [VIDEO]

Drivers will use median shoulder during rush hours.

During rush hour traffic, it can take almost an hour to drive U.S. 23 between Ann Arbor and Brighton. The Michigan Department of Transportation says it’s the most congested freeway corridor outside of Wayne, Oakland, and Macomb counties. To fix that, MDOT is creating its first “Flex Route” on U.S. 23 between M-14 and M-36. Spokeswoman Kari Arend says up to 65,000 vehicles use that stretch of the freeway every day. She tells WDET’s Pat Batcheller that the project will essentially widen the road during peak traffic times by letting drivers use the median. Click on the audio player to hear the conversation.
