SisterFriends Program Could Help Ensure Successful Pregnancies
The volunteer program is designed to provide support and resources to expectant mothers.
The Detroit Health Department is announcing a new program called “SisterFriends” aimed at getting expectant mothers through pregnancy.
Volunteers will be paired with pregnant women to provide one-on-one mentorship and emotional support.
Deputy Director Leslie Welch says “SisterFriends” will also help connect mothers to existing community resources.
“Not only is a SisterFriend a listening ear and a caring presence, but also, a Sister Friend is a resource that can really help connect moms to existing services for their health and wellbeing and the health and wellbeing of their families,” Welch says.
Welch says there are more than a hundred child health programs in the City of Detroit that most pregnant women may not know about.
She says “SisterFriends” will help mothers find prenatal care providers, maternal-child health programs, and home visiting programs.
