Milwaukee Avenue in Detroit has been renamed Stevie Wonder Avenue in honor of the Motown legend.

Wonder also received the key to the City of Detroit during a street sign unveiling ceremony Wednesday.

Wonder has been a longtime advocate for equal rights through his music and philanthropy.

He says that every time a Detroiter walks down Stevie Wonder Avenue, he wants them to remember to rise above hatred and ignorance.

“I want all of us to walk down this street that leads us to a place humanity, of equality. Of fairness and respect for each man, no matter whatever the religion or culture or color,” Wonder says.

Milwaukee Avenue was once home to Wonder as a child. The street is also a short distance from the Motown Museum.
