Michigan State University is opening a family health care clinic on Detroit’s east side Tuesday.

The Mack Avenue clinic was originally housed by Dr. Michael Popoff for more than 30 years. He was a family physician who died in April 2015.

Dr. William Strampel is the Dean of M-S-U’s College of Osteopathic Medicine. He says the facility was donated to the college, under the condition that it must continue tproviding health care to the community.

“They believed that a lot of the people down there, really need that clinic and that primary care hub because it’s easier for them to get to they don’t have as much of reliable transportation,” Strampel says. “And this is some of the people that really need this kind of care and they were very devoted to making sure that stayed there.”

Strampel says MSU will make adjustments to the clinic to fit the needs of the population over the next six months.

He says the clinic will serve all former patients of Dr. Popoff if they decide to return.
