Detroit’s hockey team seeks 26th straight playoff appearance amid questions about defense.

The Detroit Red Wings open the 2016-17 National Hockey League season in the same place last season ended: Tampa, Florida. The Tampa Bay Lightning eliminated the Wings from the 2015-16 Stanley Cup playoffs in five games. Detroit begins the new season with questions about its defense and whether the team is good enough to make the playoffs again. The last time the Wings failed to qualify was 1989-90.
