MDOT Takes a Flier on Drones

State studies the use of unmanned aerial vehicles for road maintenance.

The Michigan Department of Transportation is experimenting with flying drones to see how they could be used in road projects. MDOT just finished the first phase of a two-year study using an unmanned aerial vehicle. Operations and Maintenance Engineer Steven Cook tells WDET’s Pat Batcheller drones combined with special sensors could be used to inspect bridges–something that takes time, money, and people to do now.
