Detroit Mayor, Police Chief Encouraged but Not Satisfied by Detroit’s Lower Crime Numbers
Offcials say Project Green Light will make Detroit’s gas stations safer by connecting them with a live feed to police.
Mayor Mike Duggan and Police Chief James Craig know the gravity of these circumstances and say they’re employing every resource they can to curb crime in Detroit.
They join Detroit Today host Stephen Henderson for a conversation about crime and the city. A new plan to combat crime in the city involves the installation of high-definition cameras at some gas stations, which should allow for easier identification of crimes and criminals. Mayor Duggan says the city is trying to raise salaries and hire more officers as well as continuing to improve technology to prevent and solve crime.
“It’s clear when you look at violent crime of Detroit, we know that 25 percent of the violent crime happens with 500 feet of the gas stations,” Chief Craig tells Stephen. “Gas stations have certainly been a concern for our residents. I knew that early in my tenure here in Detroit.”
