Detroit residents can now reach out to the police through a virtual community watch site called Nextdoor.com.  The site lets residents in specific areas in Detroit provide and gather information about their neighborhoods.

Detroit Police Commander Todd Bettison says the site is set up so that residents can only chat in their own neighborhoods’ chat room.

“I tried to join, without using administration privileges; somebody else’s neighborhood and I was unable to do it,” Bettison says. “They have verification techniques where you have to actually prove that you live in that neighborhood.”

Bettison says the conversations in the chat groups are based on what people want to talk about. He says Nextdoor.com is another avenue to get the police better connected with residents and neighborhood groups.
